A moon just after rising.This is a great image of our nearest celestial neighbour, as the moon , not long after rising in the late evening sky, seems to glide along the grey clouds in an effort to be more transparent.
Since time immorial , full moons have been associated with odd or even insane behaviour, including violent behaviour, illegal activity and transforming into Werewolves !
This is where the words " lunacy" and "lunatic" originate from as the Roman goddess of the Moon was called Luna.
In 18th century England, any person on trial for murder could campaign for clemency on grounds of lunacy if the crime was commited under a full moon !
Other weird things are associated with the moon including the writings of a Bavarian astronomer Franz von Paula Gruithusien who claimed that he could see aliens inhabiting the moon, with citys , roads and forts that he glimpsed through his telescope. His claims were ignored but he eventually got a small lunar crater named after him !
