Product Description
This photograph has several notable thing in it and worth mentioning. What you can see in the top left corner is whats called a MARTELLO TOWER. These were built around the early 1800's along the east coast of Ireland to repel an expected invasion by Napoleon Boneparte, who was rampant in Europe around that time. This invasion never happened ! Possibly because he knew he would lose ! or maybe he thought it was not worth the hassle , who knows !They stand up to 40 feet high with 2 floors and could typically house one officer and 15 to 25 soldiers. Their round walls and thick structure made them almost unpenetrable to cannon fire, while the height was ideal to launch a cannon from.
Famous owners of Martello towers include James Joyce and Bono !
To the right of the image is the Dart railway track which runs north for Dublin City and south for wicklow.
