Product Description
This image is of the Yellowhammer, a beautiful garden bird that frequents Irish countryside and gardens especially during the summer.
The predominant colour of this bird is yellow and its the male bird that show best , with a striking bright yellow while the female species is a lot duller .
Their numbers , however, are in decline in Ireland with the intensification of agriculture and the dramatic decline in arable and mixed farmland, in other words Irish farmland is mostly under grass ( over 91 % ). Other factors are the destruction of hedgerows and the widespread use of pesticides and herbicides to the detriment of wild grasses and flowers that produce seeds which the Yellowhammer rely on for food.
There are several places in England which derive their names from the Yellowhammer , Yellowmam wood and Yellowham hill near Dorchester to name two.
This bird has inspired poems by Robert Burns and John Clare and has influenced musical works by Beethoven and Messiaen.
