Image of a Thrush. This bird is a common sight in Irish gardens .They feed on insects , earthworms and snails. The Thrush has a unique way of feeding on snails. It picks them up in its bill, and then, with a flick of its head, repeatedly hits the shell against a hard object like a rock. When the shell smashes, the bird can feast upon whats inside !
It was said if a Thrush flew into a persons house it foretold that a death in the house was immenent but unfortunately Thrushes are prone to crashing into window panes , which often led to their own death!
This bird features in the English poet Robert Browning's poem ," Home thoughts from Abroad" when he says "wise thrush : he sings each song twice over ".
A certain Clement of Alexandria who, way back in time, likened the sound of the Song Thrush to " a harlot's chortle " !
